Beaches in Istanbul

Taking a dip in the sea and relaxing on a sandy beach might not seem possible in Istanbul, but moving a little bit out of the city sounds like a good idea because there are few places nearby that offer a quick and short swimming or sun bathing time. Some of these public beaches on the Black Sea or in the Sea of Marmara are very popular amongst the residents of the city, especially during the weekends in the summer months. Not surprisingly these places can get very crowded, considering that Istanbul has over 16 million people living.

Some of these beaches are close to the center and easily accessible by public transport, and for some you may need a private car. Many of them are equipped with cafeterias and restaurants that are open during summer months. Most of them also have rental beach beds and changing cabins. Usually public beaches are surveyed by lifeguards during the day for the safety of swimmers. The water might be chilly as Istanbul is not in the south.

Below you can find a list of public beaches in or near Istanbul, and on which sea and area they're located. Note that there will be an entrance or daily use fee for most of these beaches.
